Letter, 1865 Mar. 24.

Major General W.T. Sherman writes to his friend, John D. Martin of Lancaster, Ohio, regarding the promotion of Emanuel Giesy who was serving as regimental quartermaster in the 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Sherman explains the mechanism for military advancement, indicating that Giesy must "go into the line of the Army" for promotion, "taking all the chances of war," as did his younger brother, [Major Henry H. Giesy of the 46th O.V.I.], who was killed in the battle of Dallas, Georgia. The letter is mis-dated March 24, 1864, as Sherman refers to the Battle of Dallas, fought in May 1864, and his Carolinas Campaign brought him to Goldsboro on March 23, 1865.
